Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is probably one of the best cornerback in the NFL. Despite having a controversial reputation, he sure can keep a promise. Last year, Sherman promised high school student Hershai James from Richmond, Virginia, a personally-funded college scholarship if she made the honor roll her senior year of high school. She felt blessed to have been given such a wonderful opportunity, and kept her end of the deal by making the honor roll. When notified on James achievements, he didn’t hesitate on rewarding her with the scholarship he promised a year before.
It is refreshing to see a player not only keep a promise to a fan but help impact their future. Sherman shows fans and critics there are many sides to players. He is not only a hot-headed player who blows up on the sidelines, calls out his coaches and take shots at members of the media. He is a great example and shows a person’s reputation shouldn’t only be based on their negative attributes. He is a more complex person than the one you see on the field; a lot of the players are, and sometimes we forget they are human just like the rest of us.
Sherman isn’t the first player to give money to a student for college, and surely, he will not be the last. What makes Sherman story special is that he personally touched this young lady’s life. He didn’t go through a foundation or third-party organization. He talked to her face-to-face and decided based on the person he saw she could become with a college education.
There had been rumors the Seahawks are open to trading him. After such a generous gesture towards someone’s future, let’s see what the future holds for him as a new football season approaches. Maybe he’ll be seen in a different light.
