NFL Draft 2017: 3 Things that Might Surprise You

Another year and another draft has come and gone. This has been one of the most interesting draft seasons by far. CNN Media reported the NFL draft drew an average of 4.6 million combined TV viewers over the three days. This is a 6 percent boost from last year. The draft was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on a giant stage, which many think made the event seem more like a musical festival. For those of you that might have missed the draft this year or need a recap, I’m here to catch you up on the three most stand-out moments that might have gone unnoticed or you might want to read more about.

Browns are Saved From Garrett’s Threats

To no surprise the Cleveland Browns picked former Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett as their No.1 overall pick. Browns coach Hue Jackson said of Garrett, “He’s a tremendous football player. He embodies everything that we look for in a Cleveland Brown. If we’re able to put him on our football team we’ll be very excited.” After months of having fans on edge on who the Browns would choose, they decided on Garrett who said, “If the Browns pass on me, I’ll punish them”. He would hold a grudge against them. Not only does the Browns not have to worry about Garrett’s threat, but good news for the Browns who ended last season with 1-15. Garrett aspires to be the greatest pass-rusher ever and the GOAT (greatest player of all time).

Bears Traded to No. 2 Overall Pick

There was no secret that the Chicago Bears needed a quarterback and it seemed they would do anything they could to get one this draft season. The Bears were set to pick third this year but chose to trade their overall pick, third-and fourth-round pick and a 2018 pick to the San Francisco 49ers to move up one spot to draft former North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Many Bears’ fans were not happy with the decision made to trade up and added to the distrust that fans have with the teams’ choices. One thing is for sure: with Jay Cutler gone time will tell if the Bears made the right decision this draft season.

Following in Their Father’s Footsteps

George Adams was selected 19th overall by the New York Giants in the 1985 NFL draft. His son, LSU safety Jamal Adams was selected sixth overall by the New York Jets. During mini camp, Adams is really stepping up and showing out. Connor Hughes of NJ.com wrote that,”Adams’ speed particularly stood out. He’s unbelievably fast for a safety. The Jets could have a good one on their hands.”

In the 1989 NFL Draft Bobby Humphrey was selected by the Denver Broncos in the first-round. Now his son, Alabama cornerback Marlon Humphrey, follows in his footsteps as a first-round pick selected by the Baltimore Ravens and is also the first player with Alabama football roots selected in the 2017 Draft. Humphrey goals were always his top priority. “When I was, I think, a freshman in high school, I wrote those goals. I wanted to play in the NFL, I wanted to play in a Pro Bowl, I wanted to play in a Super Bowl and I wanted to be a first-round draft pick, and that came true,” Humphrey said at his introductory press conference. These second generation first round picks are standing out and making a name for themselves.
